Garnet & Gold Glitter Guys It is one of the most recognizable and highly anticipated traditions of The Florida State University. While alumni return to campus to tailgate and students start making their way to the stadium, two guys prepare for each home game in an old house off Pensacola Street. This tradition begins an hour and a half before kick-off and involves 6 jars of paint, 6 pounds of glitter and an immeasurable amount of Seminole spirit.
The tradition started in the fall of 1998 when Josh White and Kevin Fulmer, two passionate Florida State fans and members of the Baptist Collegiate Ministry (BCM), wanted to find a way to express their love for Florida State football. At the home opener game against Duke, they painted themselves with garnet and gold paint and glitter and raced around the stands encouraging the Florida State faithful to cheer.
This tradition has continued without interruption since its inception, which was 12 seasons ago, with a Garnet Guy and a Gold Guy chosen from the BCM each year to lead the fans in cheering on the Seminoles. Since this tradition began, thousands of Florida State fans have taken their picture with the “Garnet and Gold Guys” and enjoyed watching their antics throughout the stands of Doak Campbell Stadium.
In 2010, the Student Alumni Association (SAA) partnered with the BCM for this colorful and spirited tradition by underwriting the expenses of their supplies. With tradition being a large focus of SAA, a partnership between them and the BCM to support the “Garnet and Gold Guys” tradition is one that both entities are proud to continue in the future.
